Celebrant profile:

Ceremonies performed: Weddings, Naming Ceremonies, Funerals

Thank you for taking time to look at my profile.

Becoming a Humanist Celebrant is without doubt the most rewarding thing I've ever done. I have spent much of my career writing and producing television documentaries about Scottish history so it's lovely to be able to play a part in Scotland's present through my role as a celebrant. I have a very genuine interest in people and consider it a privilege to be invited into their lives; whether it's to mark the passing of a loved one or celebrate happy times.

For me, Humanism is about equality and respect and about making the most of life. Humanist Ceremonies are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the one life we have, and I think it's great that people now have the freedom to mark important milestones - whether in life or death - in the way that they want to.

And having been a Team Leader with the Humanist Society Tea Run for many years, which provides food and hot drinks for Glasgow's homeless, it's also great to see the Humanist message in practice in real life.

After living in Glasgow for many years I now live by the sea in Cockburnspath with my surf obsessed husband and our dog Betty (!)

If you would like to get in touch about a ceremony please feel free to do so - I will be very happy to hear from you and to have an informal chat. I am very happy to perform ceremonies across the central belt and further afield if requested.

I've received some lovely feedback from the many ceremonies I have conducted which means a lot to me. Here are some comments from a few of the couples I have married over the years;

Robyn and William (Cottiers, West End)
"From our first meeting with Kathryn we Knew she was the celebrant for us, she put us at ease from the get go and really helped calm our nerves on our wedding day. She made some excellent suggestions such as using our school ties for our hand fasting and she really "got us" as a couple. We are not the most decisive of people but we did both have strong opinions about what we did and didn't want and Kathryn dealt with our indecision graciously and expertly, creating a beautiful dialogue that reflected us perfectly on our big day.

Kathryn did an absolutely wonderful job on the day- so many of our guests commented on the uniqueness and intimacy of the ceremony and complimented Kathryn on her succinct, professional and confident manner. We really could not have wished for a better celebrant and we would highly recommend her services! Thank you so much Kathryn for being an integral part of our wedding!"

Emma and Andrew (Killearn Village Hall)
"Thank you so much for everything. We've had so many compliments about the ceremony and that is mostly down to you in the way it was structured and your delivery. Some people had never attended a humanist ceremony before and they loved how personal it was. Can't thank you enough - we had the most wonderful day."

Iain and Angela (Number 29, Glasgow)
"Working with Kathryn was an absolute pleasure. We were put at ease right from our very first meeting and Kathryn was there to guide us all the way through to our wedding day ensuring that we felt comfortable with the intended proceedings for the ceremony every step of the way. One of the key factors that really shone through was just how much of an understanding and grasp of our personalities Kathryn had and how she used this to tailor a ceremony that was such a personal and honest representation of who we were and what we meant to each other. It was the sincere nature of this ceremony that set the right tone for the rest of our magical wedding day that was to follow. 5 weeks on and friends and family are still commenting on how “special and unique” our ceremony was.

We cannot recommend Kathryn highly enough”

Amanda and Chelsie-Lee (Lodge on the Loch)
"Just wanted to say a massive thank you for Sunday - it was perfect. A lot of our family and friends commented on the ceremony and how lovely and funny you were."

Deborah and Phil (Garfield House Hotel)
"We both had a great day on our wedding and so did all of our guests. We had some great feedback and could not have asked for a better time.

In particular the service was fantastic. Your delivery was absolutely spot on. We are both delighted that you took part and we thank you. Many of our friends and family passed on how much they enjoyed the service and that it felt like you really knew Deborah and I.
I will recommend you to others if that is ok."

Nicola and Hans(Cameron House, Loch Lomond)
"Kathryn was simply outstanding. Pre-wedding she gave us just enough prompts to keep us on course without ever pressurising us to compose a masterpiece by ourselves, and yet nevertheless she did manage to create a ceremony that was so fun, playful, heartwarming and yet so entirely unique to us that all of our guests commented on how much they had enjoyed the ceremony. It's easy to overlook the importance of the celebrant when you have so many other things to think about for your wedding day, but Kathryn is proof of how crucial it is to get someone with the appropriate gravitas and ability to convey the most personal thoughts of your life with depth and humour. She is someone that really makes the effort to get to know your story before crafting an absolutely magical ceremony. 5 stars. We would definitely use her again for our next marriage! ;-)"

Stephen and Stuart (West Brewery, Glasgow Green)
"So many people commented on how the ceremony was so personal and summed us up to a T! I think it was most peoples first experience of a humanist wedding- you've even got a few of our engaged friends reconsidering their own ceremonies now!"

Rhona and Martin (University Chapel, Glasgow)
"From the moment we contacted Kathryn, she was courteous, professional, incredibly helpful and a big part of why our day went so well. Kathryn took the time to meet with us to understand our relationship and our personalities, in order to tailor a wedding service that matched our ideas.

Kathryn drew on her experience to make effective suggestions which really added some sparkle to our ceremony and made the vows incredibly personal. Many of our guests commented on Kathryn’s excellent control of the service, and that the pace, humour, delicacy and overall impact were perfect. In fact, some of our guests are now arranging Humanist weddings on the strength of ours!

We cannot recommend Kathryn highly enough and we hope your wedding is as fantastic as ours was!"

Colin and Jonathan (Colintrive Hotel)
"Thank you again for doing us proud. Several of our friends have said it is the best wedding they have ever attended. We had the perfect day - it was everything we hoped it would be - and we loved the ceremony. It was loving, inclusive, relaxed and fun - we couldn't ask for any more. Thank you so much for all of your input and advice and for the lovely card you sent to us as well. "

Michael and Emma (Central Hotel, Glasgow)
"We would completely recommend Kathryn as a celebrant as she is very personal, professional and comes across as truly loving what she does.
From the outset Kathryn put us as ease that our day was in safe hands. She was very open to new ideas and personal touches which made our day all that more personal. Kathryn took many of our personal stories and put it all together with a good relaxed flow and plenty of humour.
On the day Kathryn was nice and early and at hand to put our minds at ease and explained everything to us as well as working with the hotel staff. Our ceremony was absolutely beautiful and made us very happy. It had a beautiful flow and followed the story of how we met and getting to that moment at the alter."

Claire and Chris (Normandy Hotel, Glasgow)
"We had the best day yesterday; thanks for being part of. Everyone was raving about the ceremony, you excelled beyond our expectations."

Natalie and Steven (The Vu)
Thank you very much for everything - from the planning to the ceremony itself, you were absolutely fantastic, and all the guests were complementing the ceremony"

Lisa and Martin (The House for an Art Lover)
“Kathryn was great to deal with. She was very pleasant and completely accommodating of our last minute changes! The ceremony Kathryn prepared absolutely reflected and celebrated us as a couple and she performed the ceremony with a relaxed authority that put everyone at ease- especially us!”

Ruari and Shane (Number 29)

Funeral Ceremonies

I consider it a privilege to conduct funerals and to have the opportunity to help families say a very personal farewell to their loved ones.

My aim is to prepare a tribute which does justice to the deceased and brings comfort to the bereaved.

Losing someone you love is a very stressful time and so my job is to make the process of putting a tribute together as smooth as possible. Normally I will come out for a house visit to talk through how you would like your loved one to be remembered, help advise on music or poetry and gather memories from you and any other family members you would like to be involved. I will then write up a tribute which I will send to you for your approval before the funeral.

Everyone has their own personal feelings on how they want a funeral to be conducted and that is the strength of a humanist funeral - it should be the ceremony that you want and an opportunity for you to celebrate the life of your loved one in the way that you deem to be most fitting.
