Celebrant profile:
Katie Macdonald
Hiya! Hello.
My name is Katie - I'm a Celebrant originally from Ayrshire , lived in Glasgow for a while and now in Scotland’s cultural centre - East Kilbride.
These things are a bit weird - like an online dating profile. So , to be honest - I just pure love hearing people's stories. How folk met , what they really thought on first impressions. The time the airline lost your case in a far away place at 3am and even after that , you decided the person - hungover / jetlagged/ bedraggled next to you is still the one for you - that's the stories I'm after!
Hearing stories about how people met and how their families have grown and turning that into a meaningful and personal ceremony - it's magic.
(Every report card I've had in my life has had some version of 'talkative' on there and it's fair to say the teachers of Mauchline Primary had me sussed as a people person, early doors.) #nosy
I also knew from a young age that religious belief was not for me.
I discovered humanism as a student. I was researching food banks and street kitchens , looking to volunteer somewhere that did not have a tied religious message . I was amazed how closely the values of Humanism mirrored how I felt about life. So, after doing voluntary work with the Humanist Society Scotland in Glasgow and marrying my husband in a Humanist Wedding Ceremony , I decided that being a celebrant was something I wanted to do too!
I would say that Humanism is a view of the world that is inspired by compassion and kindness, led by reason and based on the idea that there is more that unites us, than divides us.
We have one life , let's make it really count!
It is an absolute joy, an honour and a pleasure to be able to work with families to create ceremonies for their most important days. I love it. ❤️

Wedding & Civil Partnership Ceremonies
A wedding is both the beginning of something new and the celebration of your journey so far as a couple. My approach is that it's your day and you should have it your way!
In Scotland , the legal 'bits' you have to say are quite short , so it means we can create something unique and personal. If we manage to make everyone have a wee laugh and a wee greet we are cooking by gas, as my Dad would say!
You're the boss!
So, if you want to get married in your own kitchen on a Tuesday - lets do it! Walk yourself down the aisle. Have your Page Boys cannon ball run down the aisle in kilts. Bring your character and personalities as a couple into the process and it makes it so special -I love it! Oh and I always agree that couples retain the 'editing' rights to anything I say in the ceremony, so if you decide you'd rather not tell that story from your Hen Do in front of your Gran after all, we change it!
Whether your wedding is going to be a big gathering of lovely people or a romantic and top secret elopement, we will incorporate the traditions that feel right for you.
A Humanist wedding ceremony is made up of lots of little threads that weave together. From the readings or poems you might choose, the symbolic gestures you include and the vows you make. I will be by your side to help guide you and bring it all together.
In Scotland we are very lucky to have stunning scenery and world class venues that can really make your celebration special. Adding in words and emotion that truly reflect how you feel about each other, well it makes it fabulous.
I am based in sunny Glasgow but available to conduct ceremonies throughout Scotland. Please do get in touch for a chat about your big day and we can start planning the perfect celebration.
