Celebrant profile:

Kevin Boland

Ceremonies performed: Weddings, Naming Ceremonies, Funerals

Since retiring from teaching Drama in secondary schools in Glasgow, I have been heavily involved in promoting the arts in communities around the central belt. As a national drama adjudicator, I have travelled throughout Scotland, raising awareness in the arts.

I have been a member of Humanist Society Scotland for eight years past. I believe wholeheartedly in celebrating the one life we live and treating others with compassion, as we would have them treat us, regardless of who they are. I volunteer with HSS visiting schools to talk about humanism and the work of HSS, distributing food to the homeless.

If life is for living, it is worth celebrating. This is what drew me to becoming a celebrant with HSS. It is a privilege to assist others in creating their own bespoke celebration, whatever the occasion.

I am a member of a growing extended family. Currently known as GUK (Great Uncle Kevin) to an increasing army of the next generation. GUK is one of the best roles I have played to date, coming a close second to being a father of three.

Wedding & Civil Partnership Ceremonies

Aren’t weddings wonderful? But a crazy time indeed with decision after decision to be made. As your wedding celebrant, allow me to ease the pressure and lead you through the choices you have when it comes to putting your ceremony together, to kick off your day to remember with words and gestures that simply reflect you both. Whether that is formally – truly, madly deeply or informally full of fun and laughter, either way, it is your day, and ultimately, you will decide. Often, it will be a fusion of each. Only you can make that final decision.

What it is always is what you both want, with a little guidance from me when it comes to wording vows and promises, welcomes and toasts. Or, which symbolics to include that reflect you both: handfasting or tree planting, sand ceremony or candles, jumping the broom or drinking from the quaich. There’s nothing better too than involving your guests, if that is what you imagine, with a band warming, a response or chant or simply a song.

A Humanist wedding is no easy option! It's your words that form the ceremony, and you will be assigned some homework, but, as ‘back to school’ as that may sound, it’s a great opportunity for you both to sit down and share the reasons you love each other and why being married to each other is your ultimate choice together.

I am based in the heart of Scotland, Killearn, near the gateway to the Highlands, though will travel the length and breadth of Scotland to marry couples and help make your day something to recall for many years to come with joy.

And finally, by choosing a Humanist Society Scotland celebrant, when you join, you are contributing to the extensive charitable work and campaigning the Society supports nationally and internationally, and you will be covered by our guarantee that should anything happen to me on the day, another celebrant will appear at your ceremony, from nowhere. As if by magic!

Naming & Welcoming Ceremonies

What is in a name? It is what others associate with forever. A face, a voice, a walk, a laugh, and all other idiosyncrasies family, friends, and associates will come to recognise us by.

It is an opportunity to introduce the world to a new person, whether they are a new addition, a growing family, or just simply a change of name. A time to mark, as we best know-how with a celebration/party.

Allow me to accompany you as we create together a unique and memorable occasion for all your guests. Involving as many or as few as you deem fit for the occasion. Parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, or guide parents can be involved in readings, music, dancing, or creating some other unique memory of a special day to treasure for years to come.

Funeral Ceremonies

It is such a privilege to be asked to speak at anyone’s funeral. I had spoken at many friends and relations funerals before realising this vocation in my retirement. They tell me sixty in the new forty. Try telling that to my knees as I alight nimbly from a chair.
Life is full of funny moments and in any celebration of a life well lived, there will be much to laugh and smile about. This may be tempered with great sadness at life's circumstances or a life cut cruelly short, but I believe a funeral celebration should focus on all that was positive and good about a person. It will be these moments that those left behind will want to cherish to allow their memory to live on.
