For me, humanism is just common sense based on respect for the individual. Many people these days are not religious, but still want to celebrate a birth, a life or a wedding with elements of a traditional as well as a personal ceremony.
I started my adult life working in business management in Glasgow. Business expansion brought me to Edinburgh where I continued working in the same field. I was lucky to be able to take a career break and scratched an itch to write and completed several screenplays.
Born into a family riddled with divorce, I was stubbornly single, commitment phobic and emphatically unwilling to have children. Having met a fast-talking lawyer I was, by 1998, married and by 2001 we had the first of our two children. I became a househusband and primary carer.
More recently, I realised my role as homework helper had all but disappeared and even my previously near full-time job as the family transport consultant had dwindled away. I felt I wanted a new challenge. I’d always been impressed with humanist funeral ceremonies and knew I had a lot of the requisite skills and experience.
Becoming a celebrant has given me opportunities to meet people with wonderful stories. Being instinctively empathetic, I truly consider it a privilege to be invited into their lives to help them put together a unique and personal ceremony. Every ceremony is different and with, I’m repeatedly told, a naturally warm and rich voice, I try hard to make sure I set the right tone in every respect.

Wedding & Civil Partnership Ceremonies
Weddings and civil partnerships are great fun and for me it’s such a privilege to be asked to help people celebrate their love. We can meet and get to know each other before you book, then we can decide what style you’re most comfortable with – as formal or informal as you like. We can chat about everything you want or don’t want in your ceremony such as symbolic gestures, your love story, vows as well as the fine details like who might be involved in the ceremony. Above all, I want you to relax and enjoy your day thoroughly and for the celebration to be THE day for you and all your guests to remember.
My wedding fee includes travel, a complimentary printed presentation copy of your ceremony and a virtual catch up (mini rehearsal) a week or 2 before your big day.
I can be emailed on sandy.caldwell@ humanism.scot or called/messaged on 07939 205787.
Here are some comments from happy couples:
"We want to thank you for the beautiful job you did on our wedding day. From start to finish you were a complete joy to work with and we can't imagine going through the process with anyone else. The care and attention you put into your work is evident and we will always be grateful to have had you as our celebrant. Thank you again for everything."
"We just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your effort on the day and in the lead up to it all. You made our day so special, and you really understood what we were hoping to achieve in terms of atmosphere. Lots of our family and friends commented on how great you were and how much they loved the personal touches in the ceremony, and although we provided some of the words, it would be nothing without you bringing it to life. How special that you get to play such an important role in the lives of so many happy couples."
"A quick message to say a huge thank you for delivering the perfect ceremony for us. We think it had the right balance of humour and gravitas. The ceremony is definitely one the highlights of our day and we are delighted that we chose you to deliver it for us. We’ve had lots of compliments on how good you were and wanted to let you know."
"Just to say thank you so much for helping make our day so perfect! Everyone was well impressed with the beautiful ceremony and your fantastic wording and delivery."
"We absolutely loved the whole day and thought the ceremony was fantastic."
"Thanks again for being our celebrant and all the help and advice provided along the way. We had a fantastic day, in no small way thanks to you."
"Thank you so much for everything over the last few weeks and of course for delivering such a beautiful, truly amazing ceremony on the day."
This couple, due to Covid restrictions, had to keep changing venues and plans. "Thank you also for doing such a great job of guiding us through the process. You were a calm voice of reason when we were having to constantly adapt our plans. Your patience and flexibility were very much appreciated."
"We would like to thank you not only for conducting the ceremony but also for the help, support and guidance in the run up to the main event, we sincerely appreciate it. So many of our guests have commented on what a lovely ceremony it was and how well it was conducted by yourself."
Funeral Ceremonies
Recently, I got this really nice feedback: “The whole process and how you conducted the initial discussion and follow up, keeping in contact, was perfect and helped us all deal with the preparation for the ceremony.”
I will meet with family and friends and work together carefully to create a meaningful and personal tribute, crafted from your own words, stories and memories. The final ceremony, music and readings we agree on together will reflect your loved one’s life and character. Of course, there is sadness, but also the opportunity for smiles and sometimes laughter.
For me, it is such an honour to be able to support families through a challenging time of their lives.
And a little more feedback:
"My sister and I want to thank you so much for your superb words yesterday at Mum's funeral. So many people commented to us later in the day how much they enjoyed listening to you and how it was almost as if you had known Mum yourself. You were the glue that held the whole ceremony together and we cannot thank you enough. From our first meeting we had a good feeling that we had picked the right person to lead the way at Mum's funeral and we were right. Your kindness, compassion and insight made the whole thing a lot easier for us both."
“I can only thank you from the bottom of my heart for the beautiful tribute and all your kind words for my husband. It is something I will never forget and always treasure.”
“Wishing you success for the future to continue doing what you do so well.”
